Duke Surgeons Saved My Life!

God brought me through the brain tumor surgery. My team of surgeons, nurses and staff were amazing. Thanks to my family friends and love ones. The recovery will be a process but l will get stronger each day. God bless you all....I will keep you dated on my progress.....Rachel

Hold Your Head Up will be closed until further notice. Founder Rachel Grady will undergo her second brain tumor surgery on September 2, 2010. Drs. Allan Friedman, David Kaylie and Takanori Fukushima will perform surgery at Duke University Hospital. Please keep her in your prayers and wish her a full and speedy recovery.

We will not be accepting clothing donations at our drop-off site Curves. Thank you for your support. We will continue to keep you updated.

LOCAL CURVES NAMED AS DROP-OFF LOCATION
Durham, N.C. December 10, 2009- Michelle Haller, owner of Curves for women, is proud to announce its partnership with Hold Your Head Up, a non-profit promoting economic independence of disadvantaged women.
Curves will serve as a drop-off location for donations of women's interview appropriate clothing suits, shoes and accessories to help local low-income women enter the workforce.
Curves will be accepting donations Mon-Fri during normal business hours at 4711 Hope Valley Road in Durham. Tax receipts will be provided.
"We are honored to be the selected charity benefiting from Curves generosity and support of the community" said Rachel Grady Founder/CEO of Hold Your Head Up.
Hold Your Head Up organization received the Commissioners Community Circle Award on November 23, 2009 for demonstrating outstanding services to the citizens of Durham County. Hold Your Head Up has proven that excellence in the areas of productivity, creativity and commitment to citizens is highly valued.
About Hold Your Head Up:
Hold Your Head Up is a non-profit organization who provides, career attire, job preparation, employment retention and career development programs. Hold Your Head Up address the needs of low-income women by promoting economic security and self-sufficiency.
Women come to Hold Your Head Up by referral after having completed job training programs offered by local social services agencies and non-profit organizations.
Each client receives one interview suit and accessories if available during her first visit, once she finds work, receives additional attire, either separates or a second suit, an an invitation to join the professional women's support group "A Women's Voice".
The AWV program, a long with job readiness training and mentoring services, provides ongoing support to clients as they grow professionally, strive to turn their jobs into successful careers and journey towards economic independence.

We Are 1 Women's Conference Was A Huge Success! Low-income triangle women entering the workforce are now "Suited to Succeed", Thanks to conference sponsors and donors. Thank you to all the ladies who came out to support Hold Your Head Up at this weeks 3 day event. Conference participants donated suits, shoes, handbags, accessories and cash donations. Priscilla Coleman and Annie Ross, Founders of Infinity Diamond Social Club and Robin Criffield led the event, along with so many others.

It is wonderful to see that so many people took part in the clothing drive,"said Rachel Grady Founder and CEO of Hold Your Head Up." Giving women confidence and a positive feeling about the workplace goes beyond clothing. it's about feeling empowered, and Hold Your Head up makes it happen."

Hold Your Head Up Suit Drive was a Great Success!

Thank you to the Staff, Students and Donors who made this all possible..

Hold Your Head Up Suit Drive held on March 1-31,2010 at Wake Tech Community College in collaboration with Wake Tech's Volunteer & Service learning Program & Women's History Month Planning Committee, organizer of event Chris Doll, Volunteer Coordinator.

The drive was held again for a second year to raise donations to outfit low-income women transitioning into the workforce, who need that suit, appropriate work and interview clothing to have that polished look and feel confident and empowered.

Chris Doll, Volunteer coordinator organized the drive at six locations on campus donations were collected..over 600 items were donated and picked up on Monday.

"Thank you Wake Tech For Another Great Year Of Supporting The Cause." Wake Tech has continued to give a suit drive each year.

WAKE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE (WAKE TECH) is a two-year, public institution serving Raleigh, North Carolina, and surrounding Wake County. It was chartered in 1958 as the Wake County Industrial Education Center and began operation in 1963 with 34 full-time students. In 1964 it was formally dedicated as the W.W. Holding Industrial Education Center. The college grew rapidly, and in 1987 its name was changed to Wake Technical Community College.

Wake Tech is part of the North Carolina Community College System and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is currently the second largest community college in the state, with an annual enrollment of more than 65,000 students.

Today we attended Wake Tech Community College Health & Wellness Fair. It was such a pleasant experience for all who attended. The Suit Drive started on March 1st will end on March 31st. So many of our supporters visited our booth we had set up. The donations continue to pour in! Salon Gives a Day of Pampering to Shelter Women on Journey towards independence

Yesterday Hold Your Head Up clients received a day of pampering for Spa Day...from Styles by Tanisha Salon located in Raleigh at Epitome 314 W. MillBrook Rd.

Salon owner/stylist Tanisha Holland and stylist Kim
Dozier donated their day off to give back to the community and the
women residents of the Helen Wright Center shelter. Not only was it a gorgeous day yesterday but a day to make someone else feel good, ''said Holland".

The women enjoyed the special attention they received along with a
presentation on hair care, cuts,styles and trims were provided free of
charge for clients. The Helen Wright Center and the Salon provided
beauty care products for the women. It was so much fun for all
involved!

Hold Your Head Up Founder/ Rachel Grady has been
having spa day for their clients each year and invited Styles by
Tanisha Salon to come to the shelter for spa day and to host event.

Hold Your Head Up provides a job readiness program each week for the women at the shelter. The spa day was a wonderful opportunity for the women in the shelter to have a time devoted to them that uplift their spirits and demonstrated the amount of people who care about them on their journey towards independence.

Salon owner Tanisha Holland of Styles by Tanisha Salon will also be -providing monthly full-service salon services for Hold Your Head Up clients and Helen Wright Center residents at a discount price.

The salon has also been having a handbag drive since February which will end on March 15th.

The Commissioners Community Circle Award, created by the Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), is designed to recognize County departments and community organizations for the extraordinary services they provide to Durham’s citizens.

Hold your Head Up, a Durham-based organization created to provide career attire for
low-income women, will be awarded the November 2009 Commissioners Community Circle Award. Hold Your Head Up has received accolades around the Triangle for its ongoing effort to suit women appropriately for professional endeavors. Women that benefit from the program not only receive suits, shoes, and accessories; they also receive valuable career support services from Hold Your Head Up.

The BOCC celebrates Hold Your Head Up for successfully suiting 400 women of the Triangle its first year of inception and for providing valuable tools to overcome employment barriers. Today, many more women have benefited from the unique program. Hold Your Head Up has influenced the lives of many women of Durham and helped these women achieve self sufficiency and financial independence through their ongoing efforts.

" WOMEN ON THE ROAD TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY" OUR PROGRAMS HELP WOMEN TRANSITION TOWARDS SELF-SUFFICIENCY BY ADDRESSING THEIR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC NEEDS IN RELATION TO WORK, HOME, AND THE COMMUNITY. EACH WOMAN IS A SUCCESS STORY. SHE HAS GONE FROM UNEMPLOYMENT TO ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE. FOR THE MONTH OF JULY 2009, SEVEN CLIENTS GAINED FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT. WE CELEBRATE OUR CLIENTS SUCCESSES!

Through our suiting program Hold Your Head Up provides work-appropriate clothing to low-income women seeking employment. Volunteer personal shoppers provide one-on-one assistance and gently guide clients through the selection process, making recommendations and educating them on workplace expectations. These volunteers play a vital role in the lives of our clients by providing them with support during the first step in their transition from
unemployment to self-sufficiency.

As CEO of Hold Your Head Up, Rachel Grady leads an organization that has made a difference in the lives of more than 400 low-income women. Founded in 2008, the organization provides business-appropriate clothing, mentoring, and professional development services from more than 6 locations across the Raleigh-Durham areas in North Carolina.

Rachel is a visionary and entrepreneur, who at one point in her life felt helpless due to a long illness and recovery from a brain tumor. This mother of two young adults has faced many obstacles but never gave up. A great fulfillment came through volunteering and helping people in the community. God brought her through this very difficult time in her life. These trials and tribulations brought forth an extraordinary idea. This idea was the birth of “Hold Your Head”.
The Hold Your Head Up tag line is "From Turning A Suit into a Career." Stepping Stones to Self-Sufficiency.

How has that shaped your business strategy? We started a source for suits to help women get into the workforce. A professional appearance is an important element to helping women gain economic independence. It puts the woman on equal footing with the employer in the interview. For the month of July eight of our clients have landed full-time employment. An Element to helping women gains economic independence. Today, we are so much more than suits. Our organization addresses many issues affecting women in the workplace. A women needs to look and feel professional-yes. But if she truly is going to be successful, she needs help with all faucets of life-caring for her family, managing her career, developing her self-
assurance.

How do you help clients develop skills needed to succeed in the workforce? We focus on building women’s self-esteem and self-worth. If a woman has a relapse in employment and has been out of the job market for a while, she probably has lost confidence, perhaps has gained weight, or maybe she has child care issues. We help her deal with challenges.
For women with no work experience and limited skills, we work with 20 nonprofit employment training organizations. When a woman has completed one of these training programs and has a job interview scheduled, that nonprofit agency contacts us to set up her “suiting” appointment. Before she meets with us, we know the position she is interviewing for, her suit size, and more. So if she is interviewing for a position in banking, we fit her with a conservative, traditional suit. We give her professional outfit customized to the style of the store or industry she wants to work in.
Each woman that walks through our doors is greeted by a volunteer. She is treated with dignity and respect. We spend as much time as she needs to help her find her “power suit”-a suit that makes her feel professional and that fits her personality and the job.

What qualities make someone more likely to be successful? Self-motivation. If a woman doesn’t get a job, she keeps going. She doesn’t wait for someone else to find her a job, she keeps going. She looks on her own. She doesn’t
give up. She starts with an entry-level position, but continues her education and training to better herself-always preparing to take the next step to life.
Today, employee engagement and job retention are hot topics.

What roles do these issues play at Hold Your Head Up? We teach each woman to understand the value she brings to the employer. Our women start in entry level jobs. They know that other people around them are making more than they are, and can become discouraged. They often associate value with compensation.

We continue to reinforce the idea that whatever position you have within a company, whether you are a sales clerk, a receptionist, or in the mail room, you are an important part of the organization. We stress the importance of recognizing where you are, reaching for where you want to be, and taking advantage of opportunities to get you there.

What are some of your biggest challenges? Working women, especially mothers, need to know there barriers. They need to have a”Plan B’ for when the kids are sick or the car breaks down. We also teach our clients and our own employees the importance of having a sense of balance in their lives, especially a work/life balance. Finally, you have to be true to yourself, to your company, and to your family. But most importantly, put you first and everything else will fall into place.
In the last year, Hold your head Up has expanded the services offered to clients.

What is your "total solution"? Our focus today is on post employment training. We want to ensure that our women are successful in the workplace. Women initially come to us for a suit and self-confidence, and find that they are given support for a lifetime.

Our Professional Women's Group (“A Women’s Voice”) program provides ongoing professional development and mentoring. These groups meet monthly and feature guest speakers discussing financial planning, communication skills, the written and unwritten rules of the workforce, and other employment retention-related topics. A networking component allows our clients to share and grow with each other. It’s a real peer support group. Current members naturally become mentors.

What keeps me going is that the organization is still young and growing. We have lots to do. Hold your head Up has a unique ability to tap into the strength of women-both the strength of the clients and our volunteers.

How do you see the organization changing in the next 10 years?
I see greater concentration on employment retention. Over the next 10 years 80% of our focus will most likely be about helping women get to the next professional level. For us, it is important for women to keep their jobs and begin to build their careers. For some, that will involve going back to school, getting higher-level training.

We want to be part of helping each woman define her own success. Success doesn’t mean working your way up the ladder. For some women, success may be having their children graduate from high school-something they never did. We want to be part of helping woman define her own success.

Having women define and achieve their own success will take
us much further than just giving them a suit. We genuinely care about a woman’s ability to succeed and will do anything we can to make it happen. Seeing our clients join leadership workshops, go back to school, or get a raise gives us our greatest joy. Giving a woman a suit is a great place to start, but it’s not about a makeover for an interview-it’s about a life makeover.

Taylor will be using her creative skills in our Marketing and Public Relations Department.
Taylor Shaw, a native of Durham, North Carolina, is a sophomore at Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina majoring in Communications with a concentration in Mass Communications and Political Science. Her career goal is to become a news anchor. At Peace College, Taylor is heavily involved in many extra curricular activities such as the dance company, Helping Hands, a community service club, teaching dance classes, and NC-ACTS (North Carolina- Activating Citizenship Through Service; which is an extension of the Ameri-Corps.)

2010.. Thanks to Triangle Gives Back Recent Grant Award...This award will help Hold Your Head Up to continue our mission addressing critical social problems. First by increasing our capacity, we will be able to help more at risk women to secure employment. Second by, increasing client employment retention, which is essential to self-sufficiency. Hold Your Head Up helps women stay employed. Most importantly we will be able to purchase needed clothing items we don't have in stock mostly larger women's career clothing.

The clothing drive for Hold Your Head Up was a success 184 Items of suits and accessories were collected. How wonderful for women to come out and share clothing from their closets for low-income women transitioning into the workforce. Loads and loads of beautiful suits and career clothing were given, women will be able to hold their heads high as the go on their journey to self-sufficiency.

Judea Reform held a traditional Seder meal

The Seder is the symbolic meal traditionally held in Jewish homes on the night Passover begins. It is a freedom celebration, a time when Jews remember how their forefathers fled from their captors in Egypt and headed toward the Promised Land, a land the Bible describes as "flowing with milk and honey," the land the Bible says God promised to Abraham and his descendants.

The women's event includes a social action project in which participants are asked to bring packages of panty hose and gently used professional clothing for donation to Hold Your Head Up, a nonprofit charity helping low-income women transition to the workforce. Favorite Passover recipes will be shared during the event.

Passover this year begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 8, and continues for eight days.

I find your website and mission so important and fulfilling. Years before I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I was the victim of Domestic Violence. It is a struggle to move forward from that. I went forward, raising 5 children, and went on with a career as a paralegal for 9 nine years, before I was diagnosed with Brain Tumors. Life goes on! And with support like you offer so can women!! When I was diagnosed with BT’s, I went back to school and got my web design certification.

If more women had support like your group offers, they could pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and make something of themselves.

Exciting New Women's Seder Planned for April 5
The Eleventh annual Women's Seder: Four Questions and Then Some will be held Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. at Judea Reform Synagogue. This year the steering committee is hoping you'll take home a bevy of ideas to enhance your own Seders including unique discusssion questions, poignant readings, lovely songs, and of course, luscious new recipes. As part of a joint social action project with co-sponsor Judea Reform, women are asked to bring new packages of pantyhouse and gently used professional clothing to donate to the non-profit Hold Your Head Up for low-income women who are transitioning to the work force.

Coldwater Creek Store the Streets at Southpoint has announced that it will partner with the "Hold Your Head Up" organization. Hold Your Head Up is a nonprofit organization that provides interview suits, confidence building, and career development to women in need. From now until March 16, drop your donations of new or nearly new interview suits or professional attire and accessories at the Southpoint location to help low-income women transitioning into the work force.
The suits are provided free of charge to women who are looking for work and who have been referred by social services agencies.

My name is Carol and i am the mother of two children. I was gainfully employed and in school until i got sick a little over 16 months ago. My health issues were related to my heart, and while l wanted to continue working without treatment, life and God had other plans.

As a single mom l did not know what to do, other than to work on my health issues and get back to work as soon as possible. When my health finally allowed me to return to work unfortunately my position with my prior employer was no longer necessary and i had challenges finding a new job that would allow me to care for my family. I searched for several months on my own without resolve.

Finally, i called Job Link, who within 4 days served as a link to a new job and a wonderful program, Hold Your Head Up. Hold Your Head U provided me with what some may think of as only a suit, but they provided me with a sense of self respect and pride that i had lost throughout the prior year. And since September of 2008, l have been actively involved with hold Your Head Up's professional women's group. I have had many wonderful experiences with Hold Your Head Up and l would like to say l am thankful for the program. I have a new job, I finished all of my classes, and now only have to finish a paper to complete my Bachelor's in Health Care Administration. As important, l have AWV serving as a sisterhood to continuously provide me with a host of experiences, information, and resources.

"A Women's Voice" Professional women's group means a lot to me. It helps me to build up confidence and express myself. It helps me to feel free and sure of myself and to know that i can talk to one of the sponsors with my concerns. It also helped me look that I've done something knowing to help myself as well as my children and grandchildren. It also makes me feel good to know that i can do this and put my mind on setting good goals for myself and family.

The benefits i get from AWV include getting to meet new people, talking to others, getting new clothes and feeling proud to step out. I feel good about this AWV program and it gives me self assurance around other people. It also helps me to build my character and most of all, it is nice to know that they understand my situation and care. That is a wonderful feeling to know that some people still really care about what others are feeling about themselves.

On October 23, 2008 Durham Housing Authority hosted a job fair at Oxford Manor for residents. The turn out of job applicants wonderful! As the women entered the building they were directed to the room where Hold Your Head Up staff and volunteers were ready to assist clients by providing business attire and professional makeup application. So many women had their spirits lifted with the special attention they received to ace the interview and land the job! We look forward to the future job fairs that are scheduled.

Bag and Shoe Drive---You can help low-income women get back to work in style and clean out your closet in the process.

The Hold Your Head Up drive kicked off on Thursday July 23rd from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM in downtown Raleigh.

It was the second year of the drive.

Organizers say looking good gives women the confidence it takes to get back to into the workforce.

The drive runs on Thursdays through August 27th.

If you would like to donate, Hold Your Head Up accepts handbags, brief cases, totes, new or in excellent condition and clean suits on hangers from 1P.M. to 3P.M., Thursdays at 401 W. Cabarrus Street Raleigh, NC.

At present time,we are accepting our clients by referral only.Our clients come from a diverse group of non-profit agencies,including homeless shelters, job training programs,educational institutions, domestic violence shelters,and many other organizations.We provide image consulting interview training, job etiquette and professional makeup application.On her first initial visit a woman receives a suit appropriate for the industry in which she is interviewing including accessories. Hold Your Head Up offer clients a comfortable atmosphere in which they can share,grow,and network with other women who have recently made the same transition in the workforce.

Sarah Finley with national and international experience in community building, Sarah Finley will join Hold Your Head Up as the Director of Outreach and Development. She has previously acted as an advocate, project developer, interpreter, and student mentor for organizations as diverse as Dominion Family Services in Spartanburg, South Carolina and El Orfanato la Rosa en el Desierto in the Dominican Republic. As she and founder Rachel Grady endeavor to expand operations in order to create a multicultural support network for local women seeking self-sufficiency, Ms. Finley's passionate devotion to alleviating the challenges that face low-income Latin women and children will lend an innovative dynamic to Hold Your Head Up.
Sarah Finley's accomplishments include forging a valuable partnership between the missions department of the Community Church of Boulder Junction, Wisconsin and Dominion Family Services, the creation of a short-term music education program at El Orfanato la Rosa en el Desierto, and a substantial impact in the lives of the adolescents she has mentored in the United States and in the Dominican Republic. She is currently developing a social venture that will make educational resources more widely available to rural women and young adults in developing Latin American countries.

Taylor Shaw, a native of Durham, North Carolina, is a sophomore at Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina majoring in Communications with a concentration in Mass Communications and Political Science. Her career goal is to become a news anchor. At Peace College, Taylor is heavily involved in many extra curricular activities such as the dance company, Helping Hands, a community service club, teaching dance classes, and NC-ACTS (North Carolina- Activating Citizenship Through Service; which is an extension of the Ameri-Corps.)

Teresa Ostuni is a graduate of SUNY Cortland in york where she received her
Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, Public Relations and Advertising.
She works at a local news station where she hears of the heartache and
desperation that people endure, and is confronted first-hand with the harsh
reality that is helplessness. She is a strong-willed, determined individual who
strongly believes that a few kind words can change one's mind, and a helping
hand can change one's life. She has the drive to help people in need, and
is blessed with the ability to communicate with all people in an encouraging and
productive way. She is a motivator and a true leader.
